Star Survives Supernova But Not For Long

This image is DEM L241, a supernova remnant in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Recent data from the Chandra X-ray telescope has identified a massive young star near the centre of this remnant. The star is the binary pair of what was once two massive stars. One of the stars went supernova to produce the remnant in the image above. The star that blew up has been estimated to have been 25 to 40 times larger than our own Sun. The result of this explosion was either a neutron star or a black hole. The surviving star is having its material stripped away by this either black hole or neutron star. This means that in a few million years the surviving star’s fate is sealed. It will also supernova and could produce another neutron star or a black hole. Imagine two black holes being formed right next to each other.
