Satellite Batteries Could Increase Space Debris

Satellite Batteries Could Increase Space Debris

Satellites have batteries and there is a risk that the batteries can leak or explode when enduring the conditions in space. This can lead to satellites breaking up and add to the ever increasing and worrying amount of debris floating in space around us. Many systems are in place to ensure the batteries are safe during the duration of the satellite’s mission, but after the mission when the satellite powers down the batteries can remain a risk. To counter this the ESA is looking for companies to produce an inert power system.
