Magnetism Explains The Young Stars Mystery

In the 1980s too much infrared light was being measured around young stars. Even if the debris disk that forms the planets was taken into account, there was still too much light. The debris disk gives off infrared light as it is heated by the young star. Now it is thought that the answer to the 'too much infrared light' riddle is magnetism. The theory is that magnetic loops carry debris disk material above and below the disk. As this debris is heated it makes up for the increase in infrared light that is observed. The magnetic loops are though to be similar to the magnetic loops of material that are seen on the Sun.
