Gaia Opens its Eyes and Starts to Focus

Gaia is the ESA’s spacecraft that will measure the positions and movement of a billion stars in our Milky Way. It will produce the most accurate map of the Milky Way to date and in 3D. It is hoped the mission will tell us about the galaxy’s origins and evolution. The spacecraft has opened its eyes and is starting to focus on a small number of the stars. It will take many months to fully calibrate and focus on the billion stars in the project. A painstaking process to achieve the level of accuracy required to detect the tiny movements of the stars over the five years the project will run for.
