Recently we met the most massive and brightest star in the sky, R136a1. Now let's look at the least massive stars, the featherweights of the star world. 

OTS 44

OTS 44 is the smallest known brown dwarf star. This tiny star has only about 1.5% the mass of our own Sun. This equates to about the mass of 15 Jupiters. Interestingly, depsite its small size this star is thought to have a protoplanetary disk that may one day produce planets.

This brown dwarf (that would actually appear magenta in colour to the human eye) is 550 light years away in the constellation of Chamaeleon. This is a southern sky constellation.

V 1581 Cygni C

Brown dwarf stars can't sustain hydrogen fusion and so some people think they should be classed separately from the main sequence stars that do burn hydrogen in a fusion reaction, much like our own Sun. So the smallest or least massive main sequence star is thought to be V 1581 Cygni C also known as GJ 1245 C. This tiny star is about 79 Jupiters in mass. It can be found in the incredibly interesting constellation of Cygnus. This constellation contains so many deep sky treasures and is easily seen in the Summer  months in the northern hemisphere. Well worth a peruse.
