Green Vegetable Galaxies

Many of us are told when we are young to eat our greens as they are good for us. The same may not be true for galaxies. The discovery of the super rare green bean galaxy is a good example of this but not so for the pea galaxies. Green Pea galaxies are the star forming masters. They are considered to be old galaxies from the early universe. They are forming stars so efficiently it has been calculated that they are about 568 times more efficient at converting interstellar gas into stars then our Milky Way. Pea galaxies are small, containing a stellar mass of around 3,000 million compared to the Milky Way's 580,000 million. These could be considered the good greens for the universe.

Green Bean Galaxies

These are very rare galaxies indeed. Only about 16 of these galaxies have been identified from over a billion. They are unusual because unlike most galaxies the supermassive black hole at the centre of these galaxies causes the whole galaxy to glow green. The glowing is caused by the black hole ionising oxygen. Most galaxies have a small region around the black hole that glows due to the ionising of oxygen but this rarely exceeds 10% of the galaxy. Strangely, the incredibly large supermassive black holes at the centre of these galaxies appear to be fading. You wouldn't want to live in the ionising radiation of these "bad for you" green galaxies.
